Educational Philosophy

The New Classical Academy offers a classical education in a hands-on environment. Our school graduates polite, intelligent, enthusiastic, thoughtful young men and women of today. Our students become strong readers, adept mathematicians, and persuasive, elegant writers with an extensive working knowledge of history and science. Latin, Greek, and modern languages are integral to our program, and the arts are part of every topic we study.

Our philosophy encompasses active, cooperative, multi-age and self-directed learning, access to quietude and the outdoors and individual attention for assessment. The school is alive with real science experiments, dramatic presentations, debates, group art projects, music, work-in-progress timelines, classic literature, and manipulative math.

The structure of our school day is unique. The first half of the day is in small classes with a teacher providing intensive one-on-one and small-group work in the basics, quiet self-guided work and exploration of the year's themes. Each child works at her own pace in the basics being kept to age-appropriate standards while being allowed to delve deeply into areas of interest.

After lunch the school becomes an open forum. We work together across age boundaries. Each year the entire school focuses on a period of World and American history. The whole of history is covered within a four-year cycle, and the study of literature and the sciences is tied into the historic period.

The classical concept of the trivium will guide our presentation of the material, giving students first the knowledge, then the understanding, and finally the creativity to approach each subject in the fullest way. The New Classical Academy graduates thinkers with the tools required for meaningful participation in their community, their lives, and their world.
