Enrollment
We are thrilled to announce that we have 45 students enrolled for fall! We have a total of 15 spaces available in all grades and programs. We have room in the K-2 class and the 6-8 class in both the traditional and distance learning programs. Please call us for availability in the 3-5 class and the home school program. Our school community will get together for a potluck in mid-June. This will be a great opportunity for the kids to meet their teachers and classmates.

Building Progress
The building is under renovation and will be on three trucks coming our way in mid-July. We are planting trees on the site as part of our landscape buffer and would love to have help putting them in the ground. If you would like to get a good workout while helping the school at the same time, give Kelly a call at 242-4822.

Friday Class
The Friday class ended on a high note as we painted faces, blew up balloons and danced the limbo. The students enjoyed a "World History Jeopardy" round, even though no one could remember who the Frenchman was that founded Quebec (ask them)! Everyone agrees the year was a resounding success. Here is a quote from a mom who said it better than I ever could. "I was SO very impressed with Jake's work from the year!!!! I was especially blown away by his vocabulary exercises when he composed his own sentences. WOW! It made me even more excited about next year. :) And his math was incredible, he really learned so much last year. Especially considering he was only there once a week and having loads of fun!"

Networking
Congratulations to my business partner Kate Hyde who has been nominated to be on the Mountain Microenterprise Board of Directors. In addition, we attended their Women's Business Conference and were inspired by such notable women as Mayor Terry Bellamy and poet Glennis Redmond. Kate and Elise had the great opportunity of meeting Rick LaFleur, one of the authors of Wheelock's Latin. He was very encouraging and has promised assistance, support and help in publishing the third through fifth grade Latin curriculum that Elise is writing for us this summer.

Meet the Staff: Elise
Elise Anschel grew up in Charleston, SC, where she began her study of Latin in the seventh grade. While at Swarthmore College she studied Latin, Greek and ancient history, graduating with a B.A. in Latin with Distinction in 1996. After completing her teaching certification at the University of Colorado at Boulder, Elise taught Latin briefly in Colorado Springs before deciding to return to graduate school for a Ph.D. She spent three years at Duke, completing course work and preliminary exams, until the birth of her daughter and a sudden happy move to Asheville changed the course of her life. She received a M.A. in Classical Studies from Duke. Elise has lived in Asheville with her husband Paul and her 3 year old daughter Livy for 3 years now, and is ready and excited to begin the challenge of helping young minds learn to love Latin. When she's not reading Latin, Elise is also a devoted practitioner of Ashtanga Yoga.
