Issue VII: Come And Join Us!

Potluck

A potluck will be held in June for enrolled students and their families. The celebration will take place at Kelly's house in Weaverville—very close to our Stoney Knob Road location. This will be an opportunity for our new school community to meet and for the students to meet their teachers. If you have an application on your desk, now is the time to send it in, as this will be an invitation only event! (Enrolled families: look for an email from us soon with more details.)

Word of Mouth

Enrollment numbers are steadily increasing, and we were surprised to see that most of the attendees at the last open house heard about us from a friend. As the saying goes, if you like what we are doing, tell a friend; if you don't like it—tell us! Here are some of the traits we see in our New Classical family. Do they fit someone you know?

  • likes to travel
  • enjoys freedom and flexibility in their schedule
  • home schoolers looking for community
  • public schoolers looking for a challenge
  • close family ties
  • strong work ethic
  • minimal exposure to media
  • desire to be lifelong learners
  • children are the focus of family life

Building Progress

The modular plans have been submitted to the building department, and the Metropolitan Sewerage District has given us the green light to connect to the sewer, so everything is moving forward on our building site at 38 Stoney Knob Road. Look here next month for the opportunity to help The New Classical Academy put up our first schoolhouse!

Friday Class Update

The home school enrichment class is drawing to a close, with the last class scheduled for May 26. The students have finished their math units, acted out scenes from Shakespeare, and honed their writing skills. In addition the older students will be taking their end of year standardized test over the next few weeks. Kate and Kelly performed a "Goofus and Gallant" style skit about how to prepare for and take a test. Ask the kids to demonstrate for you!

Meet the Staff

Ashley Daugherty has been a practicing attorney since 2002, working first in private practice in Miami, Florida, and then in government in Nashville, Tennessee. She obtained both her J.D. and B.A. degrees from Vanderbilt University, with an undergraduate major in History. Ashley and her ten-year-old daughter are excited to be moving to North Asheville, along with a manageable menagerie of dogs and birds. When not preparing to lead the middle school students in a challenging and enjoyable school year, Ashley will spend her summer hiking, gardening, and reading.
