Teen Club

One of the most amazing things that happened at our school this past year was the addition of the teen club. All students in grades 6 through 9 participated as we went on monthly trips which included white water rafting, skiing, a play, pizza and a movie, a back pack camping trip and more. The year ended with a dance and it was this event which more than any other showed how our school is different. The girls dressed up, the boys combed their hair, and they all danced together. There were no wall flowers, no broken hearts, no scenes or drama, just good old fashioned fun. At the end of the night they went outside and held hands in a circle, dancing around under the stars in a joyful celebration of their friendship, their youth, and the successful completion of a happy school year. This year we add 10th grade, and we are all looking forward to another fantastic year. Back to top.

Meet the Staff: Katherine Daven

Katherine Daven has worked with children of all ages as an elementary school teacher, social worker, service learning coordinator, and camp counselor. From 2001 to 2008 she worked as the Outdoor Experiential Learning Specialist at Isaac Dickson Elementary School. The job involved teaching organic gardening, science, drama, writing, nature, insects, and literacy, just to name a few. Katherine loves to work in a non-traditional teaching setting and believes many of the skills that are needed for adult life can be learned while trying to capture a live chicken: the knowledge of when to go slow and steady, when to reach in quickly for the grab, and how not to squeeze too tightly when the goal is achieved. One of her greatest passions is teaching children (really anyone) to knit. With her husband, Morgan, and her children, Sam and Maddie, Katherine spends many fun hours camping, hiking, hunting for geocaches, and playing in rivers and streams. She is thrilled to be the new K-2 teacher at The New Classical Academy. Back to top.

Asbestos

This will serve as our requirement to inform parents that there is no asbestos present in our building located at 38 Stoney Knob Road, Weaverville. The asbestos management plan is maintained in the school office and copies are available upon request. Back to top.
