What is a classical education?
For an excellent explanation of classical education, read the essay,
"The Lost Tools of Learning" by Dorothy Sayers
Why do you teach Latin starting in the third grade?
Latin is the foundation of our language, and a knowledge of Latin vocabulary
helps students in their English vocabulary and grammar, as well as in
learning the technical vocabulary of the sciences. We introduce students
to Latin forms during the grammar stage of their education, when memorization
is easy and fun.
Will there be scholarships?
Eventually we hope to offer scholarships based on financial need. The
school will have a store and the proceeds will go to the scholarship fund.
In addition, any fundraising will contribute to the scholarship fund.
Do you test and which standardized test do you use?
We use the Iowa Test of Basic Skills, because it is widely used and accepted
by public, private and charter schools. We test one time at the end of
each school year starting in third grade. Before entering kindergarten,
students are given a kindergarten readiness assessment.
Will there be field trips?
Yes, we believe that learning is hands-on, and that students benefit from
time spent in the community and surrounding mountains. Parents may occasionally
be asked to volunteer to drive on field trips, as the school will not
have buses in the beginning.
What about P.E. and sports?
While we are not yet able to offer a formal sports program we are committed
to healthy children physically as well as mentally. We take a holistic
approach to wellness that includes movement, physical activity and nutrition.
Our children do not spend the day sitting in desks but up and moving around.
Our schedule includes a full hour for lunch and play- for all ages. We
go outside during this time if the weather permits and make this as active
as possible for all children.
Why don’t you have computers in the classrooms?
We believe young children must have the opportunity to read books and
explore the natural world before learning to use technology. In the same
way that a carpenter learns to use hand tools before power tools, children
must work with their hands, heads and hearts before they begin to rely
on technology.
What about students with special needs?
Please contact us to discuss your child's needs.
Will you be accredited?
The accreditation process, from non-governmental, voluntary organizations
such as Southern Association of Independent Schools and the Southern Association
of Colleges and Schools, is a five-year process which we will begin as
soon as the school is in operation.
