What is a classical education?
For an excellent explanation of classical education, read the essay,
"The Lost Tools of Learning" by Dorothy Sayers
Why do you teach Latin starting in the third grade?
Latin is the foundation of our language, and a knowledge of Latin vocabulary
helps students in their English vocabulary and grammar, as well as in
learning the technical vocabulary of the sciences. We introduce students
to Latin forms during the grammar stage of their education, when memorization
is easy and fun.
Are there scholarships available?
We have a scholarship fund which currently supports several students with financial need. We do not have other scholarship money available at this time. Click here to donate to the fund.
Do you test and which standardized test do you use?
We use the Iowa Test of Basic Skills, because it is widely used and accepted
by public, private and charter schools. We test one time at the end of
each school year starting in third grade. Before entering kindergarten,
students are given a kindergarten readiness assessment.
Will there be field trips?
Yes, we believe that learning is hands-on, and that students benefit from
time spent in the community and surrounding mountains. Parents may occasionally
be asked to volunteer to drive on field trips, as the school will not
have buses in the beginning.
What about P.E. and sports?
We belong to a Hospitality Sports League for 6th through 8th graders with several other local private and charter schools. The students play flag football in the fall, basketball in the winter, and soccer in the spring. In addition, students have a full hour of outdoor play everyday and they frequently form pick-up games of soccer, capture the flag or other neighborhood style games.
Why don’t you have computers in the classrooms?
We believe young children must have the opportunity to read books and
explore the natural world before learning to use technology. In the same
way that a carpenter learns to use hand tools before power tools, children
must work with their hands, heads and hearts before they begin to rely
on technology.
What about students with special needs?
Please contact us to discuss your child's needs.
Will you be accredited?
No. The accreditation process is primarily intended for private high schools in order to assist colleges in assessing potential students.
What extra-curricular activities do you offer?
We offer the sports league, Odyssey of the Mind, and Teen Club. We also take field trips, volunteer in the community, and invite parents and community members in to offer enrichment classes.
What art and music do you provide?
We produce and perform two musical plays each year and there is a piano available in the school hallway for students to play. Art is part of every topic we study and during the afternoons students have done everything from painting, to sculpture, to knitting to Shrinky Dinks.
What is your tuition?
Traditional program tuition is $8000 for the year. For the K-2 Learn at Home program it is $6000. Tuition is payable in 12 monthly installments and we offer a 25% discount for siblings. Our tuition is similar to other private schools in the area, and it is about the same amount that the State of North Carolina spends to publicly educate a student. This is by design, as we want to model a better way to educate for the same amount of money. For more details about our tuition please call 658-8317.
Are you affiliated with any other schools or any religion?
No. The New Classical Academy is a secular school which is not affiliated with any religion or any other school. The philosophy for the school was created by the directors and while we have similarities with other classical schools our model of classical education in a hands-on environment is unique.
